Entering the country as a tourist

GOODS ALLOWED TO ENTER THE COUNTRY:

Foreigners entering the country as tourists are subject to the same provisions applied for Chilean nationals tourists.

Goods allowed to enter the country duty free and VAT free:

a) The traveler baggage.

b) Non-commercial goods purchased at the arrival Duty free shop up to US$500.

c) It can also temporary enter the country, by means of a previous entry declaration submitted before Customs, goods such as: photo cameras and accessories, film cameras or o projectors and slide projectors; portable typewriters; record players and discs; tape recorders and cassettes, portable radios; binoculars; general sport gear, camping gear and other used goods, provided that these are normally carried by tourists for their personal use and they will bring them out when exiting the country.

d) Besides, it can also temporary entry the country a vehicle for up to 90 days, from the tourist s entry date, subject to the procedure described below.

Tourists can directly carry out the process of entry of goods to the country before Customs, without a Customs Broker taking part in the process, and nor needing other type of authorization.

Goods allowed to entry the country by paying customs duties and VAT:

Other new or used commercial goods for up to US$ 500 FOB, and for up to US$ 1.500 FOB if of non-commercial use, provided that they are not subject to control before import.

Release of goods can be directly performed through a Simultaneous Payment Process of Entry Declarations, without needing a Customs Broker s participation.

At the International Airport Arturo Merino Benítez, the Regional Directorate of the Metropolitan Customs has implemented an special office within the revision room that allows passengers to pay all duties and charges at a Treasury Service s cash desk, 24 hours a day.

Any other goods not previously considered shall meet all rules and regulations for its import provided by Customs, needing a Customs Broker s services.

 

Vehicle entered to the country under a Temporary Import Authorization for Vehicles (T.I.T.V.) or Customs Pass (L.P.A.) shall be allowed to stay in Chile for only 90 days during the same calendar semester.

These formalities are the same required for the Chilean National Travelers .

The Temporary Import Authorization for Vehicles (T.I.A.V.) and Customs Pass (L.P.A.) allow tourists to freely drive within the national territory during its effective dates.

This suspense regime must be cancelled within its effective date through the following methods:

1. By bringing back the vehicle out of the country.
2. By an Import Entry Declaration totally processed.
3. By physically delivering the vehicle to the nearest Customs. In this event it will remain under bonded warehouse, paying the relevant charges.

Submitting an Entry Declaration shall be only performed by people under exemptions and it will have to be submitted before the due date of the Temporary Admission and Customs Pass, since once the relevant suspense regime has no longer effect, the vehicle will be assumed abandoned and put to public bidding. In this case the import of the vehicle can be executed before the bidding, by paying the relevant bonded warehouse and charges, provided by article 154 of the Customs Ordinance.
